The Canadian Women's Club
of New York City Inc, was founded in 1920 by a small group of Canadians
who came to New York as strangers in this great city. There were those
who came from Canada to further their education, business or
professional growth, or who had been transferred temporarily for
business reasons.
Our membership is made up of Canadians who reside in
the tri-state area within one hundred miles of New York City,
naturalized Americans, card carrying Canadians, or those who have
adopted Canada by ancestry, marriage, interests, or by friendly
persuasion. Membership must be sixty percent Canadians at all times.
Objectives are to promote social and cultural
gatherings, to further amicable relations between the people of Canada
and the United States, and to establish a non-political, non-sectarian
organization in the best interest of Canadian women, as well as to
maintain a Scholarship Trust Fund.
The Scholarship Trust fund was established in 1954.
The club's official scholarship awards are based on competitions open to
Canadian performing artists. The club makes occasional discretionary
grants to assist other Canadian artists. It also produces or sponsors
special concerts, recitals and shows featuring its award winners and
other performers. To date, the Club has granted over fifty scholarships.
Over the past year our social and educational programs
have included a cruise around the tip of Manhattan aboard a historic
schooner, theater nights, an investment challenge, an ice skating event,
regularly scheduled book club meetings, and interesting professional
women speakers.
The Maple Leaf Ball is an annual tradition. In the
last few years we have hosted it in conjunction with the Canadian
Association. This is always an outstanding event. Funds raised at this ball
support the Scholarship Trust Fund.
