When a crime is committed on the border of Quebec and Ontario, everyone is forced to come together, whether they want to or not. As the investigation gets underway, we meet David Bouchard (Patrick Huard) and Martin Ward (Colm Feore), members of their respective provincial police forces who are forced to work together. The two men couldn't be more different. In fact, the only thing they appear to have in common is that they are both cops, albeit cops with totally different styles. Annual General Meeting
Tuesday June 21, 2005 at 6:30 pm
Annual General Meeting of the Canadian Women's Club of New York City, Inc. will be held at the law offices of Edwards & Angell LLP, 750 Lexington Ave. (NW corner of 59th and Lexington) 12th floor, on Tuesday June 21, 2005 at 6:30 pm. All members are invited to attend.
An epic tale of fathers and sons, of friendship and betrayal, that takes us from Afghanistan in the final days of the monarchy to the atrocities of the present.
The unforgettable, heartbreaking story of the unlikely friendship between a wealthy boy and the son of his father's servant, The Kite Runner is a beautifully crafted novel set in a country that is in the process of being destroyed. It is about the power of reading, the price of betrayal, and the possibility of redemption, and it is also about the power of fathers over sons-their love, their sacrifices, their lies.
The first Afghan novel to be written in English, The Kite Runner tells a sweeping story of family, love, and friendship against a backdrop of history that has not been told in fiction before, bringing to mind the large canvases of the Russian writers of the nineteenth century. But just as it is old-fashioned in its narration, it is contemporary in its subject—the devastating history of Afghanistan over the last thirty years. As emotionally gripping as it is tender, The Kite Runner is an unusual and powerful debut.

Blown Away is unique – a timely, impartial and national examination of the many intersections of women and guns in America: professional, social, recreational, criminal and political. Caitlin Kelly, winner of the Canadian National Magazine Award and five fellowships, a former reporter for the Globe and Mail and Gazette, interviewed 104 men, women and teens ages 13 – 72 from 27 states: lobbyists, legislators, activists, hunters, sport shooters, women who have shot and killed and those injured by gun violence and the homicide or suicide of their loved ones. These include such high-profile women as Patty Varone, for nine years the principal bodyguard of Rudy Giuliani, Rep. Carolyn McCarthy, whose husband was killed and son shot on the Long Island Railroad and Suzanna Hupp, a Texas legislator whose parents were killed by a crazed gunman. From pop culture images such as Thelma and Louise to the horror of Columbine – where guns were supplied by a young woman – these intersections are inescapable, even if you have never touched or would never touch a gun yourself.
“Refreshingly even-handed in covering a topic that has all-too-often been the subject of slogans and partisan debate. Thoroughly researched, Blown Away is sure to become a standard.”
– Thomas Gabor, Department of Criminology, University of Ottawa.
This event was well attended and after Ms Caitlin Kelly spoke there was a lively discussion with wine and refreshments.
